35th Anniversary of The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley

At its meeting on January 26th, The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley celebrated its 35th anniversary.  Spun off of The Rotary Club of Newton-Conover, a lunch club, the new club originally met for dinner in the evenings, but struggled for several years to find its footing.  Eventually concluding that the evening schedule simply didn’t work, the club moved to a breakfast meeting format and began to prosper.  The club has met in various locations around Newton and Conover, but has been meeting at Catawba Country Club since 2007.

Newton-Conover landscaper Kip Robinson (a charter member) chaired the celebration meeting, having invited other charter members to attend and share some stories from the early days of the club.  Beth Lilly (a charter member and  local minister) related how she met her husband, Tom, a long-time current member, at a club meeting and how the club was instrumental in setting up contacts that led to the establishment of The Corner Table in Newton.  Shown in the photo are charter members who were present at the anniversary celebration.

The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley has provided three Rotary International  District Governors, four Assistant Governors, and one Lt. Governor, and won multiple awards, including six Governor’s Awards for Excellence.  For many years the club raised money for charity through its Annual Charity Auction, but four years ago began sponsoring Hickory’s Charity Chase Half Marathon, the area’s premier running event, which raised more than $30,000 last year for local charities.  Aside from work with local charities, the club sponsors the Bunker Hill High School INTERACT Club and funds two college scholarships each year, one for Catawba County Schools graduates and one for graduates of Newton-Conover High School.  The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley meets Thursday mornings at 7 am at Catawba Country Club in Newton.  For more information see the club’s website, , or contact the Membership Chair, Bill Shillito, at 828.320.6410.
