Hickory’s 12th Annual Charity Chase Half Marathon (with Charity Chase Lite added this year), sponsored by The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley, ran on Sunday, June 4th, with almost 400 runners participating. The event raised a record $38,000 for local charities in cash and in-kind donations, and with approximately $15,000 coming from runner registrations, The Rotary Club of Catawba Valley is estimating that $35,000 will be available for distribution. Hickory’s Charity Chase is a major community event that draws participants from a broad area and occasionally internationally. Aside from the challenging course, one of the draws is the heavy participation and encouragement from the community and volunteers that liven up the event with imaginative approaches.

Work on Charity Chase started several months ago, of course, with the organizing committee being co-chaired by Past President Kelly Pulliam, owner of Foothills Tile Creations, and member Kevin Spiva, of Earnhardt Chevrolet in Newton, NC. Fundraising was led by member Tom Lilly, President of Normtex Fibers. A key assist in promotion and running the event was provided by member Kelly Stewart, President of RunTimeRaces.com. Thank you, of course, to all of the members of the organizing committee and the club, as well as their family members who volunteered, for their efforts in staging this event and raising money that is critical to the missions of our local charities.
